Something to read

In due time Hannah conceived and bore a son. She named him Samuel, for she said: ‘I have asked him of the Lord.’

1 Samuel 1:20

Something to think about

Today’s passage brings joyous news for Hannah who waited patiently and was blessed with a son. Tenneh, too, was blessed with a healthy baby boy after her second pregnancy, thanks to the help of Nurse Judith Lassie.

Watch the film below to see what happened.

Christian Aid saw that Tenneh, and many mums like her in Sierra Leone, were in desperate need of safe and accessible healthcare.

Your support meant that when Tenneh was pregnant a second time, she had Nurse Judith by her side, supported by our local partner RADA. Tenneh gave birth safely on a bed at the health centre.

Tenneh gives thanks for nurse Judith: ‘With the coming of Judith, so many lives have changed. We know that with Judith, as long as we see the light at the end of the tunnel, we’ll be OK.’

Something to do

What would you like to give thanks for? Mothers in Sierra Leone give thanks for healthy babies and safe deliveries. Births are celebrated with a naming ceremony or ‘pull na doh’ traditionally held on the seventh day following the birth of a newborn.

Many of us will give thanks for and celebrate the birth of babies, and give grateful thanks for the healthcare we receive from the NHS. How could you show your thanks to God this Christian Aid Week? Take a moment to reflect on the blessings you have today.

Something to pray

Christian Aid Week prayer

God our Mother and Father,
we praise you
for the blessings you shower upon us.
Bless the lives of our sisters and brothers
and their precious children.
In life's saddest moments,
that’s when we feel your love most, O Jesus.
Continue to dwell in our hearts, Lord.
May your love keep us strong.
