'Peace be with you.'

Something to read

While they were talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them: 'Peace be with you.'

Luke 24:36-43

Something to think about

Christ’s resurrection is real and tangible. Luke does not describe Jesus as ‘appearing’ among them. Rather, Luke tells us that Jesus came and ‘stood’ among them. A physical act.

The disciples were terrified and thought they were seeing a ghost.

'Look at my hands and my feet; see that it is I myself,' Jesus said. 'Touch me and see; for a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.'

The resurrection, in Luke’s account, is the resurrection of the body. A physical event.

Luke goes on to reinforce this by describing how Jesus eats a piece of fish. His telling of the story makes it clear that the physical realm is not divorced from the spiritual; the body matters.

We're called to live out our faith in the physical realm which we live in – to be stewards of God's creation.

The Commonwealth heads of government gather in London this week. As Christian Aid seeks to focus their minds on climate change, we're reminded that the body and soul are inextricably entwined.

Our actions and our hearts must both bear witness to the hope of Christ's resurrection.

We're called to be stewards of God's creation, the physical realm which we live in.

Something to do

Jesus ate a piece of fish and told his disciples to touch him. Take time to consider the material things that you touch today, to savour the food that you eat and give thanks for these human bodies that God dignified in the resurrection.

Something to pray

Risen Jesus,
We thank you for your greeting,
'Peace be with you'.
May we embody that peace
wherever we go today.
Amen.
